Abundance Of Food In America

It has been a bit of a surreal experience to walk down the aisles of the grocery store.  Culture shock really set in on my first trip to buy supplies.  There are so many choices, all of the fresh items look picture perfect, nothing is outdated, and there is so much of EVERYTHING.  No wonder Americans have the reputation of being fat.  I came back from India lean, but a weight that is healthy and easy to get back into all of my dress clothes.  I am going to have to rein in my eating habits in my reclaimed world before I even get started.   Eating is fun for sure, but…

What happens to all the food when it is outdated?  I was going to start a business shipping it overseas, since they don’t mind carrying outdated items on their shelves.  And do people really buy all of this stuff?  We aren’t even as populated as India, but there are so many different variations to chose from.  Walking down the cereal, cracker, cookie (starch) row was mind boggling.  And what about the frozen food section–oh my gosh.  Capitalism at its finest?

As I return to eating “foods from before,”  I am still most satisfied by fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, yogurt, nuts, and rice.  Processed foods have no flavor and they don’t feel satisfying to the body.  The body really knows the difference.  I am less interested in pasta, flour based foods, sugar, high fats, meat, and cheese.  I have really enjoyed tumeric and other spices as a replacement for garlic/onions.

We really have no excuse for poor nutrition and poor eating habits when everything and anything is available.
