Rhythm as Life

Is there any type of sound that doesn’t evoke a reaction of some sort?  Listening to the lapping of ocean waves on the beach, hearing the wind through the tree branches, turning up the radio when your favorite song comes on the station, honking and bustling sounds of inner city activity, or… the list is endless.

Whether it is your favorite song or not, music can influence your emotions and desire to react by moving. Most work out classes use upbeat, quick tempo music to encourage enthusiasm for pushing through the physical challenge of the session.  You see people in the gym and out in parks walking, running, etc. with ear phones piping in inspiring/motivational tunes.  A stretching or yoga class can use mood enhancing music to create an atmosphere of tranquility and inner peace.  The sound of silence and stillness is often a welcomed accompaniment for introspection and can suggest a pause in our fast paced lives.

Sounds are such an awesome part of our existence, so explore them and sense into how they can help enhance your action for the moment.  Inner rhythm is often dictated by our heart and breath as a metronomic pulse of life. Life is dependent on rhythm.  The structure of music can help us get back on course when we feel out of sync with the world. Calorie free and inspiring, how do you beat that combination.

Beautiful example of how rhythm permeates and enhances our lives

Rhythm as life

dedicated to the people of baro.Life has a rhythm, it’s constantly moving.
The word for rhythm ( used by the Malinke tribes ) is FOLI.
It is a word that encompasses so much more than drumming, dancing or sound.
It’s found in every part of daily life.
In this film you not only hear and feel rhythm but you see it.
It’s an extraordinary blend of image and sound that
feeds the senses and reminds us all
how essential it is.By the brothers Thomas Roebers

“Foli†is the word used for rhythm by the Malinke tribe in West Africa. But Foli is not only found in Malinke music, but in all parts of their daily lives. Directed by Thomas Roebers, this short film portrays the people of Baro, a small town in eastern-central Guinea, and gives you a glimpse inside their culture of rhythm. As the Malinke man says, “Tous les choses, c’est du rythme.†(“Everything is rhythm.â€) What makes this film even more beautiful is the fact that it was edited so as to reflect Malinke rhythms.
