Weight Distribution, Posture, and Alignment

When do we need posture and alignment?  The better question would be when do we not need posture and alignment? Everything about the body design is focused on alignment and posture, so the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones can operate with minimal distortion, pain, or injury.  For many  repetitive stress, accidents, genetic composition, and more can lead to postural challenges.  Seeking professional input and assessment, learning how to correct or improve old injuries, developing a program to strengthen and lengthen challenge areas, and attention to detail are all ways to start making changes.  How I walk, reach, and bend are all moments to sense into my body and work towards improved functional alignment.

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

NASM

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) is one of the certification programs for personal trainers.  I have been so inspired by the development/evolution of the Selfseeds Program that I have taken the plunge to become a personal trainer.  The modern material for training the mind and the body is wonderful and in alignment with what I have observed/learned from the past ten years of watching Selfseeds evolve.  The NASM program will tie together my college education with human health, wellness, and fitness thus providing a more scientific, concrete basis for supporting people’s wholeness pathways.  I was going to leave the nutrition and fitness aspects of Selfseeds to the professionals, but instead, I decided to dip into the material myself and have a better understanding firsthand.

Stationary Bike & Integrative “I” Band www...

How to be efficient and inspired with fitness?  Over and over I marvel at how simple but effective something can become with a little bit of creativity.  Having a stationary bike became an important investment for my fitness minimum while living in India; walking was a given, but I needed to add a fitness approach that was complimentary and didn’t require a lot of space.

Quite quickly, I built my stamina by using the three positions on the bike, (sitting, standing, and hovering.)  I would create different intervals mixing and matching the three positions for an hour a day.  As that became easier, I looked at doing something with the sitting time, so I added the Integrative “I” band and a set of small dumbbells.  With both exercise tools, I could incorporate a toning workout with stretching, resistance training, and weight training while keeping rhythm and cardio in the mix.  Creativity is the key. Deciding how long for a set, how many repetitions, what angle, where to attach the band (or not and freestyle it), and sensing into where my body could use personalized work is up to you and how you want to enhance your workout.

One of the most fundamental points to keep in mind is posture and core engagement while playing with the exercise tools.  In fact, that is key period to maximizing one’s benefits of cycling or with any exercises.  The more one focuses on proper alignment, a vertical spine, and core connectedness, the greater benefit one experiences for a more complete body workout.

I have added a few video links below to get the creative juices started.  Have fun and don’t hesitate to email me and ask questions.

More fun with another integrative exercise challenge! As a precautionary step, a person can do a run through without the ball by executing it flat footed and then even progress to a 1/2 ball before going for the more advanced level.  Always be careful not to hyper-extend the shoulder joints.  The key to all of it is the core control and how the extremities are an extension of the core.  Get to know the inner workings of yourself.
