National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) is one of the certification programs for personal trainers.  I have been so inspired by the development/evolution of the Selfseeds Program that I have taken the plunge to become a personal trainer.  The modern material for training the mind and the body is wonderful and in alignment with what I have observed/learned from the past ten years of watching Selfseeds evolve.  The NASM program will tie together my college education with human health, wellness, and fitness thus providing a more scientific, concrete basis for supporting people’s wholeness pathways.  I was going to leave the nutrition and fitness aspects of Selfseeds to the professionals, but instead, I decided to dip into the material myself and have a better understanding firsthand.

When I graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Genetics, I was accepted to work on a PhD in Equine Physiology at Kansas State University, so over 25 years later, it is fun to circle around that point, but with humans instead of horses.  Reading about VO2 max and other parts of cardio input/export triggered memories from the past.  The NASM program is based on a step program with stability/endurance, strength, and power as the three steps.  These aspects can be applied to resistance training, plyometrics,  balance, and more at every step and in every variation of an individual’s needs for development.  Exciting!!  So for now, I am diving into the book, videos, and flash cards while working with a personal trainer who was certified over 10 years ago.  My hope is to be a student as an individual developing a personal program, a student/apprentice of becoming a personal trainer, and an eye on the integration of the new material into the fundamentals of Selfseeds.  I love learning, so I am super excited about this new avenue of information.
